Week beginning 21st September
We had a lovely week of learning in Year 5/6! In Maths, we worked on place value, reading and understanding numbers up to 10,000,000.
In English, we brought our poetry unit to a close by heading outdoors to observe the nature around us and use our observations as inspiration for one final haiku. The children then shared their poems with the class, choosing how they wanted to present them. Some created presentations using PowerPoint or Adobe, while others designed their work on card and presented it to their classmates.
As part of our Land, Sea and Sky topic, we learned how to use classification keys to sort and classify living things based on their characteristics. In RVE, we looked at the story of Moses and the burning bush, retelling this important part of the story and discussing what it means to be chosen by God. It was a great opportunity for the children to think about the story's meaning and share their own ideas.
We’ve continued exploring Land, Sea and Sky, and the children have been making some great connections between our different areas of learning.
In Literacy, we’ve been discovering haiku poetry, playing with descriptive vocabulary and thinking about how carefully chosen words can create an image or mood. The children have now started planning their own 5–7–5 nature haikus.
We’ve also been looking closely at satellite images, using what we can see as clues to make inferences about different places. This has linked nicely with our Science learning, where we’ve been investigating habitats and adaptations and thinking about why particular organisms are suited to where they live.
Our Art has taken inspiration from Welsh artist Kyffin Williams. The children have been experimenting with different watercolour techniques and using these to create their own Welsh landscape paintings.
Alongside this, we’ve begun exploring Moses and the Burning Bush in RVE, created story maps to retell the story and talked about what it means to be chosen. During Helpwr Heddiw, we’ve also been practising talking about the weather and dates in Welsh.
In Maths, we’ve been working with numbers up to 1,000,000, as well as completing our National Reading and Numeracy Personalised Assessments.
Da iawn, Year 5/6!
It’s been lovely getting to know Year 5/6 and beginning our new learning together. We’ve started exploring our Land, Sea and Sky theme, with the children already asking questions, sharing ideas and making some great observations.
In Literacy, we explored acrostic poetry, using the natural world as inspiration and thinking about how descriptive words can bring our ideas to life. We’ve also begun looking at ecosystems in Science, discussing how living things depend on their environments and each other.
Our Humanities learning has introduced us to different landscapes and habitats, while in Art we have been getting to know Welsh artist Kyffin Williams and looking closely at his landscape paintings, noticing his use of colour, texture and brushwork.
In Maths, we’ve been building our understanding of place value, reading and writing numbers to 100,000 before extending this to numbers up to 1,000,000.
In RVE, we started our new unit by thinking about what makes people truly happy, discussing the difference between things that make us happy for a short time and what can contribute to a happy life. We also explored rules, kindness and how our choices can affect others.
It has been a really positive start, and I’m looking forward to seeing where our learning takes us next!
