Week Beginning 2nd February

This week, pupils have been completing their final piece of writing in an explanation text genre. The learning sequence began with a cold write, which enabled purposeful assessment of the children's current understanding and identification of individual next steps.

These assessments informed a carefully planned sequence of lessons delivered using the Talk for Writing approach, developed by Pie Corbett. Throughout the process, the children engaged in structured discussion and peer feedback to refine their understanding of effective explanation writing.

The sequence concluded with a final hot write, where the children applied their individually developed success criteria to produce a high-quality piece of writing that demonstrated clear progress and met the agreed expectations.

Week Beginning 26th January

The children have been busy with our Back in Time topic again this week. They suggested ways to find relevant information about dinosaurs and developed their ideas by using prior knowledge to explain their thinking. They also reflected on how they have learnt and identified the approaches that worked best, linking these to our big question: Who Eats Who in a Habitat?

As part of this, the children discussed feeding relationships and revised key vocabulary such as predator and prey, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. More recently, they have explored producers and consumers within food chains and food webs.

We also considered how scientists represent these relationships, sharing ideas and discussing the most effective ways to communicate food chains and food webs.

Week Beginning 19th January

This week, our children have been busy exploring the Nessy platform and diving into a variety of exciting learning programmes! Now that everyone has completed their assessments, Nessy will help us track progress in reading, spelling and punctuation in a fun and engaging way. We’ll be celebrating achievements along the way, with certificates awarded in our weekly celebration assemblies to recognise fantastic effort across the platform. 🌟📚

Week Beginning 12th January

It’s been another busy and exciting week in class! 📚✨

We’ve been diving into explanation texts, working together to build up our working wall to help us as we move forward in our learning. The children have shared some great ideas and are becoming more confident explaining their thinking.

Our Back in Time topic is well underway, the children are fully engaged with the age of the dinosaurs and they are teaching me a thing or two! 🦖 They have been busy diamond ranking different aspects of dinosaur habitats, carefully deciding level of importance, explaining why they made their choices.

We’ve also been practising our Welsh oracy skills 🗣️. Using personal information placemats, the children enjoyed chatting with their talk partners and extending their answers to keep conversations going.

Finally, we are currently exploring ideas for a school trip, so please keep an eye out for more information coming soon!

Week Beginning 5th January

This week, the children settled back into their normal school routines very well. We began our Back in Time topic and the children contributed thoughtful and enthusiastic ideas to support their learning. As part of this topic, the class explored the Triassic period and learned about how dinosaurs lived and survived in a very different environment.

The children particularly enjoyed taking part in sorting activities using Venn diagrams, and it has been encouraging to observe the high level of collaboration and engagement throughout the week. We would also like to congratulate the class for winning the attendance award once again this week and look forward to seeing if they can achieve this again on Friday.

Week beginning 15th December

This week, we were welcomed to William Aston Hall by the First Experiences team from Theatr Clwyd. The concerts were fully interactive and were directed by Rob Guy and presented by Iwan Garmon.

The pieces the children took part in included In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt by Edvard Grieg, the pupils also engaged with Mambo from Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. Another piece was Morning by Edvard Grieg which gave the children the opportunity to improvise.

The children also sang Let Your Spirit Fly from Charanga with Makaton. Classes had the option to learn the song in English or Welsh, and they were given the opportunity to sing in both languages during the concert.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Ruth Mulholland for her outstanding dedication and enthusiasm in teaching the Year 3 children the cello. Her inspiring work ensured that the children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and developed a real excitement for playing an instrument.

Football:

Class 3 enjoyed their football session in PE this week. Building on last week’s class match, the children continued working within their teams to develop their possession skills. They demonstrated impressive control of the ball and made increasingly accurate passes, even when under pressure!

Outdoor Numeracy:

The children in Years 3 and 4 showed excellent focus and resilience while working in cold conditions this week. Using their data-handling skills, they created a table and applied their understanding of time to predict how long each task would take. They then used the iPad stopwatches to measure the actual duration and compare it with their predictions.

We were extremely impressed with the collaboration, enthusiasm, and accuracy the children demonstrated throughout the activity — da iawn pawb!
